Onstream Media Announces Results of Survey on Large-Scale Webcasting

October 21, 2015, Pompano Beach, FL – Onstream Media Corporation, a leading online service provider of corporate audio and web communications, today announced the results of a comprehensive survey looking at trends for large-scale webcasting, which reaches audiences of more than 500 participants. Onstream Media sponsored the survey, which was done in conjunction with Streaming Media, who hosted the survey, and research firms Unisphere Research and Transitions, Inc. The survey analyzed data from more than 700 respondents.

The survey probed trends in large-scale webcasting services, from the types of devices supported for webcast viewing, to feedback about pricing on recurring webcasting usage. Some of the key findings include the variances between usage of mobile platforms vs. desktop or large-screen viewing. On a personal level, people preferred to use desktops and laptops for live streaming webcasts vs. smartphones and tablets. On-demand media tended to be viewed from mobile devices.

In choosing a large-scale webcasting service provider, respondents understood the importance of selecting an external provider to support bandwidth, high-quality service and consistent viewer quality. They also expressed interest in broad device support. However, price was a key obstacle to their adopting a large-scale webcasting service provider. Many said they would prefer a flat-rate event price or flat-rate per-month pricing model for recurring live webcast use cases if it was available.

Another important issue raised in the survey was that of authentication. Respondents said a seamless authentication experience was essential to their workflow, indicating a need for large-scale web service providers to develop and offer authentication services for traditional (desktop/laptop) devices as well as emerging technologies (smart phones/tablets and smart TVs).

Media consumption patterns were also surveyed, with educational content (including live lectures and distance learning) coming in as the number one type of webcasting content over the last year (62 percent of respondents reporting); followed by free entertainment webcasts (such as concerts and sporting events); public training content (live training webcasts); and enterprise content (internal training or corporate webcasts). Social media content (live user-generated content) came next, followed by entertainment pay-per-view webcasts.

“As a market leader, Onstream Media continues to stay ahead of industry trends,” said Randy Selman, President and CEO of Onstream Media. “This survey offers valuable insights into consumers’ media usage now and where they are going.”

More than half (56 percent) of the respondents said they worked for a company that produces live webcasts. The survey drew mostly on the opinions of North Americans with 84 percent of those completing the 34-question survey; Europeans made up the next biggest demographic group with 10 percent.
