“Extending Your Reach: Online Counseling” white paper is free to download from PresenceLearning’s growing library of special education resources
September 03, 2014, San Francisco, CA – As seen in tragic headlines and news stories, America is experiencing a mental health crisis. In 2010, the National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP) stated that 75 to 80 percent of students in need of mental health services do not receive them. This gap in services — whether attributed to a shortage of therapists, a misdiagnosis or no diagnosis at all — is detrimental to student outcomes in both academic and extracurricular environments. To guide school districts in the development and deployment of high-quality counseling services for students, PresenceLearning, the leader in online speech therapy and other special education-related services for K-12 students, has published the “Extending Your Reach: Online Counseling” white paper. Based on psychological assessment and psychotherapy expert Dr. A. Jordan Wright’s “Changing Minds” webinar, the white paper explains how schools can affordably, flexibly and effectively provide counseling services in an online format.

This new white paper explores how online counseling can be used to overcome these obstacles, assess and then conduct three types of therapy: Behavior Intervention and Emotional Regulation, Social and Life Skills Training and Cognitive Behavior Therapy.
“Online counseling is powerful in that it doesn’t just solve problems of access or allow for scheduling flexibility. It does all of that while enabling schools to match students with the right counselor for their needs,” said Dr. Wright. “A child may need a behavior interventionist or an emotion regulation interventionist. Alternatively, that child may need a cognitive-behavioral therapist or someone with specific skills in eating disorders or substance abuse. No single counselor is completely skilled in treating every type of problem.”
The white paper is the latest addition to PresenceLearning’s growing library of eBooks, white papers and other resources that give special education administrators and leaders readily available expert information on topics affecting special education, as well as insight into how they can better manage challenges and increase student outcomes.
Since 2009, PresenceLearning’s online speech therapy services have provided schools with a practical, affordable new option for service delivery: web-based access to a nationwide network of live, highly qualified, fully licensed speech-language pathologists who are available whenever and wherever they are needed. This past year, PresenceLearning added occupational therapy (OT) and online assessments for both speech and OT to their service offering. By partnering with PresenceLearning, school districts can fill staffing gaps related to acute and chronic SLP and OT shortages, reduce high caseloads for onsite personnel, reduce their backlog of assessments, improve student outcomes and become more efficient. PresenceLearning also offers access to technical specialists, as well as culturally and linguistically diverse speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists.
PresenceLearning has delivered nearly half a million live online therapy sessions to students in public school districts, charter schools and virtual schools of all sizes nationwide.
