At first, Skype was used by home users who liked to keep in touch with their friends who moved elsewhere, or to communicate with new online friends. It seems that the application is now used in business purpose, because it offers free video conferencing. However, there is a competitor, Google’s Hangouts, which can steal Skype’s users.

Number of group participants and costs

Skype allows you to add up to nine people in a group video chat, but for that, if you live in the US, you must upgrade to Skype Premium and pay a monthly subscription of 4.99 dollars or 7.49 dollars per month, for a 3 month subscription. But it’s worth the money, because you can have group screen sharing, unlimited calls in your region, live chat customer support etc.
