Telemental Health Can Improve Quality of Life for Veterans

New research finds that home-based telemental health for depression improves quality of life for depressed elderly veterans.

Investigators at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston discovered the technique was as effective as in-person visits.

Telemental health is using telecommunications to provide behavioral health services. This can mean providing health workers in remote areas with continuing education on mental health topics, videoconferencing consultations, and providing traditional psychotherapy and psychiatric consultation services through real-time videoconferencing.
