When NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden attended a conference via telepresence robot in March 2014, he may have been on the vanguard of a technology trend.

Snowden didn’t attend the TED 2014 conference in person because he faces arrest in the U.S. on federal charges of espionage and theft of government property for disclosing the surveillance practices of the National Security Agency.
Instead, Snowden traversed the conference call and met with attendees virtually using a Suitable Technologies BeamPro robot that displayed his face via webcast video. Snowden is now living in Russia, where he was granted temporary asylum.
