Video Conferencing Now An Indispensable Tool For HR Specialists

August 27, 2014 – According to studies, remote job interviews have become common practice for over a third of Human Resources (HR) specialists. As the IT market continues to change, HR specialists’ preferred channels of communication are also evolving. This has meant the development of a new business culture where video conferencing has become a necessary part of doing business.
The global market has shifted towards mobility: Professionals now have constant access to high speed Internet and cheap web cameras, headsets, and speakers. The HR recruitment market is rather competitive and quick to adapt to the rapidly changing needs of their companies, and recruitment specialists must constantly improve recruitment techniques and introduce new working methods. According to a study by Redshift Research, video conferencing ranks third (47 percent) among the business communication channels for HR specialists, after e-mail (89 percent) and voice (64 percent).
A notable example is the growing use of video conferences for conducting job interviews. Video interviews allow HR representatives to preserve a recording, make a thorough analysis of the interview, and show the recording to an employer. The employer, in turn, does not have to spend time or be present in person to see and evaluate the candidate for a given position. Video interviews indicate professionalism on the part of an HR manager, whose mission is to unlock the potential of the candidate and present it to the representatives of the company. Those representatives can participate in the interview and review, regardless of their location.
This trend is not only about keeping up with modern technologies. The other main reasons for the increasing popularity of video conferencing are saving on business trips, closing vacancies quicker, and capitalizing on opportunities to reach geographically distributed candidates. Job interviews via video conferencing allow an interviewer to accurately estimate the communication skills of the applicant, as the distance makes it easier to remain impartial and attentive to detail. In Russia, this technology has been used by Beagle, a recruitment company, for nearly four years. Beagle was the first to introduce video recruitment to the Russian market.

On-demand video allows training materials to be used over and over again, and systems can record who watched what videos and when in order to support compliance needs. Live video (video conferencing) is also good for live training over large distances and to large audiences. Secondly, recruiting. Interviews over video can be conducted without the need for travel, saving money of course, but also saving time because video conferencing greatly eliminates schedule coordination needs. I don’t need to get free time on one day with all my executives to interview someone; the person can be interviewed on different days by different people. Video conferencing is increasingly accepted as a way to meet people–people are not so camera shy anymore. A video conference can also be recorded so that people who are not available at a particular time and don’t want to schedule their own interview, can watch the recording at their convenience. Video conferencing is playing an increasingly important role in the HR office today, and will continue to do so in the future. The advantages are obvious – interview more candidates in less time by more hiring decision makers – and the cultural resistance to being on video is diminishing every day,” states Andrew W.
